Living shakespeare

Starting with learning to read and understand what Shakespeare has written we see his words soon rolling off the tongues of the incarcerated. Sometimes it can sound like a foreign language but always they are amazed when it all starts to make sense. Putting up any of Shakespeare’s pieces is an undertaking. Doing it in a men’s prison brings its own challenges - putting a 250lb man in a dress, training the audience’s ear to understand what is happening, bringing wigs, makeup and stage swords into a prison facility.

poetry

Emotions, Expression, Feelings, and the things that matter. Writing poetry is another way to loose the bonds of a prison cell. Your words can transport you to your future. In print, your poetry can travel to places you cannot. You live on outside through your words.

Yoga & Meditation

Maintaining the integrity of your public image is an inseparable part of your business, whether you’re a creative individual or a small company. Protecting your privacy and your public image from slander and libel is only one side of the coin; negotiating sponsorships, public appearances, and endorsements is the other. Our firm advises on both, offering litigation and dispute resolution, defamation (pre and post publication), and other image protection mechanisms—all so you can amplify and control the way you want the world to see you.

Spoken word

The artistic presentation of poetry or storytelling emphasizes the presenters ability to communicate. Telling hard truths or sharing hopes and dreams knowing how to make your case effectively, using words, is a skill we all need to keep sharp. To create an opportunity for the incarcerated to practice this adds tools to their re-entry skills bag.

Telling your story, creating your future, honoring your elders. Writing sorts your thoughts, clears your head and creates the building blocks of your future.

knitting & Crochet

Improv

What do Improv skills offer an incarcerated person? The ability to think on their feet, to make a quick assessment of where they are, who they are with and the best (or safest way) to maneuver the situation.

the writer’s book club

This hybrid program emphasis learning life lessons from reading a book and applying it to themselves in written essays. In life you are called on to discern the lesson. In life you are expected to apply the lesson in ways that help you move forward. And in life, you need to be able to explain yourself.

debate

In debate you are asked to prepare a defense for both side of the issue at hand. You have to be able to defend what you hold dear and what you are still questioning. You have to be ready to go as soon as the clock starts and you have a limited amount of time. It is not unlike preparing to leave prison and return to community. Hold tight to what matters the most and find a way to understand what you are unsure of.
